Hyde Park is kind of a shitty area of Boston with some nicer areas tucked in. Basically, all the commercial areas of Hyde Park are busy but look like ass–er, that is, they look kind of like LA. Concrete everywhere, and Hispanic toughs hanging around. (I guess that sounds sort of racist, but the Irish thugs are in Dorchester, which I guess strictly speaking is rougher than Hyde Park anyway.) They just redid the commuter rail station, so that’s nice. It’s a very fast line to South Station, totally convenient. The public library is a beaut because the mayor of Boston lives in Hyde Park. Yes, amidst the industrial corridors and crappy duplexes there are some truly nice homes in Hyde Park. But… it’s Hyde Park. Tucked between freight railroads, empty lots, active industrial rows, and the crappy side of Dedham. Basically, ugly as sin.

Besides, who would want to live in Hyde Park when there’s Roslindale?!?!

They are currently building 16 single family homes on a small lot in South San Francisco (11 miles from downtown SF) which they are planning to sell for $1 million plus. And that is South San Francisco! No front yard, no private corner lot, one parking space if you are lucky, and no history.

But, KB, let’s not forget that Hyde Park is only 8 miles from central Boston (roughly 25 minutes according to Yahoo maps). Try to find anything similar to the above property at a similar price within 50 miles of San Francisco and you will be hard pressed.

Hyde Park is more like a suburb of Boston–the subway doesn’t even go there, you’d need to take the commuter train into Boston. I bet that the condo prices in Boston are similar to the condo prices in the Bay area!
