BURNING HOT! City Heat Maps: Silicon Valley

Zillow.com – City Heat Maps: Silicon Valley
Explore the range of home values in areas of the city by looking at the Zestimateā„¢ per square foot value key below. Neutral colors indicate that there are no homes or that we do not have Zestimates for homes in those neighborhoods.

(Note that green/yellow splotch around Stanford is a Stanford-subsidized/controlled anomaly. From what I understand, you have to be Stanford-connected to buy there.)

BTW, to those who say “Well, the Bay Area’s not that expensive other than housing” (which doesn’t make any sense … as if housing doesn’t impact labor costs or explain why Safeway cookies are almost 15% more expensive here than in other states)… here’s a map of “expensive” New York:

Surprised?

You do realize that some of the suburbs on that NY map include part of Brooklyn you could get shot just for walking across the street?

  2. burbed Says:

SF has places like that too. But they cost more. :(

  3. jaded Says:

At least in New York you can get something remotely close for cheap-ish. I mean if you extend the Bay Area map to Sacramento, you might see a few teeny green patches. Hey if you are willing to forgo Manhattan you have hope. In the Bay Area you need to be willing to Forgo Bay views from 300,000 feet.

  4. Sandy Says:

So where exactly do the section 8 housing and projects figure in out in SF?

If you look at SF, there’s exactly one green/yellow dot. That surrounding area is where you you can find a few housing projects. Also, where the e in “Children’s Playground” is is another.

Here’s another famous Section 8 house:

Note that Oakland is far more greener – but… i don’t think Brooklyn is as bad as Oakland.

The only green stuff in Oakland is where you better stay below window level to protect yourself from stray bullets. I’ll take Brooklyn

There are some anomalies to point out on the Manhattan map as well. Much of downtown appears to be deceptively “cheap.” This is the NYU factor. NYU has an ongoing campaign to annex and convert the entire downtown Manhattan area into an extended campus. The other anomalies are the dozens of housing projects along the East River and the gargantuan Peter Cooper/Stuyvesant Town rental developments that occupy entire city blocks. If you take them out of the equation, pretty much all of Manhattan south of 96th St (with the exception of Central Park, of course) is a single, monolithic red splotch.

And it’s no coincidence that the large swaths of bright blue are associated with areas with legendary (and not in a good way) pasts: the South Bronx, Crown Heights, Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, Ridgwood, Cypress Hill, etc. I defy you to name any neighborhood in the Bay area with such a famously murderous, violent pedigree!

Richmond – which was declared as being in a state of emergency due to crime.

There’s also Oakland – how can you forget Oakland.

    Isn’t BedStuy all gentrified already?
