Density – I’d call them “programmers” myself, but still, that work only pays $10 an hour, while twisting balloons, you get far more than that an hour, variety in the workplace, neat farmers’ market food, and little kids’ smiles.

Jesus, if I thought there was any money at all in programming, I’d learn more of it.

Instead the story of tech is like this: When I was a repair tech (yes to component level) the guys out in our shipping and receiving area were making a few bux an hour more than me, and the guy really making dough working humping boxes for the benefits, and went out evenings and played drums in bands. He’s probably living in a million-dollar house and all paid for now.

Tech is a dying whale. Twist balloons, learn the banjo, or at least learn to drive a forklift if you want a good life.

esr: don’t glorify them by calling them engineers. Despite what they called the department in college, programming in C++ is by no means “engineering”.

As for the house: I like the way that the guy bought a TV stand and then did not put the actual TV on top of it. Like, he realized how dinky the gigantic stand made his TV look!

gfw – I’ve met no end of once-engineers who are street musicians, balloon-twisters, etc. in the BA. They’re making more and a lot happier than they were in the belly of the dying whale that is high tech.

Redweed is the perfect Freudian slip for this Deliverance-esque area. At least you don’t have to make an unprotected left turn against Highway 17 to access it, like one place I looked at.
