What does $1,199,999 buy Alameda these days?

Thanks to Burbed reader RinkRat for this find. Now, as we all know, Burbed doesn’t do a heck of a lot of East Bay – let’s face it, it’s not really Real Bay Area.

But if this is true, then perhaps it is time to reevaluate that and include Alameda in that designation!

Anyone familiar with Alameda and can share some of the biggest selling points of that area?

This house is definitely quite remodeled – but is it really worth $1,248,000? Of course it is! 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms? Extra wide side yard for that all so important additional parking (hello entrepreneurs!) and granite galore?

“WILL NOT LAST AT THIS PRICE” is the understatement of the year. How much over asking will this sell for?

It should be pretty clear now to everyone that there is a Real Bay Area, and a non-RBA. (Why there’s no wikipedia entry on this yet is a problem!) San Jose is fast falling out of the RBA.

But nonetheless, this house certainly has its unique selling points – hardwood floors with original charm, a master bedroom suite that may not have a permit. What more could you ask for at such a bargain bargain bargain price.

SHORTLY before Lynn Sugarman of Teaneck, N.J., bought her summer home in Lake George, N.Y., two years ago, a routine inspection revealed it had elevated levels of radon, a radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. So she called a radon measurement and mitigation technician to find the source.

DETECTION Using devices like the Geiger counter and the radiation detection instrument Stanley Liebert measures the radiation and radon emanating from granite like that in Lynn Sugarman’s kitchen counters.

“He went from room to room,” said Dr. Sugarman, a pediatrician. But he stopped in his tracks in the kitchen, which had richly grained cream, brown and burgundy granite countertops. His Geiger counter indicated that the granite was emitting radiation at levels 10 times higher than those he had measured elsewhere in the house.

“My first thought was, my pregnant daughter was coming for the weekend,” Dr. Sugarman said. When the technician told her to keep her daughter several feet from the countertops just to be safe, she said, “I had them ripped out that very day,” and sent to the state Department of Health for analysis. The granite, it turned out, contained high levels of uranium, which is not only radioactive but releases radon gas as it decays. “The health risk to me and my family was probably small,” Dr. Sugarman said, “but I felt it was an unnecessary risk.”

Thanks to all the people who sent this to me. The fact is that there’s really nothing to fear with regards to this. How often are Bay Area people at home anyway? The weather is beautiful, so you’re always outdoors – unless you work for a start up or VMWare where 14 hour days are mandatory. Radiation shmadioation.

A bigger fear IMHO would be not living in the Bay Area. Dragons lie ‘yond there.

[This house] is so awful in the photos that burbed should feature it as another acid trip.  Hideous.  Hard to decide which is the worst photo, the front, the back “lawn” or the prominently featured roll of TP in the bathroom.  The unmade bed is another winner.  Also it’s in Rancho Rinkydinky, not “real” Cupertino.

Hm, personally I don’t think it’s as trippy as the last Acid Cupertino house featured on this site:

Most importantly, the price is lower – so it’s simply not as special.

Is the fall of Cupertino?? Is the rapture at hand? Will I be “left behind”?
