What does $1,199,999 buy Alameda these days?

Thanks to Burbed reader RinkRat for this find. Now, as we all know, Burbed doesn’t do a heck of a lot of East Bay – let’s face it, it’s not really Real Bay Area.

But if this is true, then perhaps it is time to reevaluate that and include Alameda in that designation!

Anyone familiar with Alameda and can share some of the biggest selling points of that area?

Burbed reader madhaus sent this to me a few days ago, but I forgot to post it.

This house is definitely quite remodeled – but is it really worth $1,248,000? Of course it is! 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms? Extra wide side yard for that all so important additional parking (hello entrepreneurs!) and granite galore?

“WILL NOT LAST AT THIS PRICE” is the understatement of the year. How much over asking will this sell for?

Great home on tree lined street featuring 4 bedrooms 3 baths hardwood floors fdr two fireplaces two car garage pool and great master suite

Here’s what Burbed reader Sam had to say:

Nothing like an algae filled pool to dress up a house. What it’s an REO? You’re kidding!

Au contraire! This green pool is actually just an example of the amazing plethora of green collar jobs that
are fast flooding the Bay Area. By harvesting the algae, you’ll be able to power your home greenly and reduce your dependence on foreign oil. Woot!

Not only is there instant equity here, there’s also passive income!

My personal bet: this will clear $1.5 million. Thoughts?

What an ideal starter home * hardwood floors with original charm * Buyer to verify SF and permits for additions. Master bedroom suite is not know if permited * Ideal location * Possibilities are endless.

It should be pretty clear now to everyone that there is a Real Bay Area, and a non-RBA. (Why there’s no wikipedia entry on this yet is a problem!) San Jose is fast falling out of the RBA.

But nonetheless, this house certainly has its unique selling points – hardwood floors with original charm, a master bedroom suite that may not have a permit. What more could you ask for at such a bargain bargain bargain price.

Like the copy says, the possibilities are endless. Wouldn’t you agree that this is a good starter home?

What’s Lurking in Your Countertop?

What’s Lurking in Your Countertop? – NYTimes.com
SHORTLY before Lynn Sugarman of Teaneck, N.J., bought her summer home in Lake George, N.Y., two years ago, a routine inspection revealed it had elevated levels of radon, a radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. So she called a radon measurement and mitigation technician to find the source.

DETECTION Using devices like the Geiger counter and the radiation detection instrument Stanley Liebert measures the radiation and radon emanating from granite like that in Lynn Sugarman’s kitchen counters.

“He went from room to room,” said Dr. Sugarman, a pediatrician. But he stopped in his tracks in the kitchen, which had richly grained cream, brown and burgundy granite countertops. His Geiger counter indicated that the granite was emitting radiation at levels 10 times higher than those he had measured elsewhere in the house.

“My first thought was, my pregnant daughter was coming for the weekend,” Dr. Sugarman said. When the technician told her to keep her daughter several feet from the countertops just to be safe, she said, “I had them ripped out that very day,” and sent to the state Department of Health for analysis. The granite, it turned out, contained high levels of uranium, which is not only radioactive but releases radon gas as it decays. “The health risk to me and my family was probably small,” Dr. Sugarman said, “but I felt it was an unnecessary risk.”

Thanks to all the people who sent this to me. The fact is that there’s really nothing to fear with regards to this. How often are Bay Area people at home anyway? The weather is beautiful, so you’re always outdoors – unless you work for a start up or VMWare where 14 hour days are mandatory. Radiation shmadioation.

A bigger fear IMHO would be not living in the Bay Area. Dragons lie ‘yond there.

Total fixer-upper, As Is Sale, Home is in deteorirated condition and is not livable, has been disconnected from utilities. Check with Building/Planing for permits. .. Property been sold is APN 434-24-041 Lot 11, certificate of compliance has been approved by city, new APN not yet available.

Burbed reader Brian had this to say:

Yet it is still $205,000! And it’s not even in a good zip code!

Check out the street view for a picture of the house. Remember when we had that burned down house in Detroit? Well…. apparently THIS is how much it would have gone for in East San Jose.

Alright. Now I’m really intrigued!

Drum roll please!

This is another proud Bay Area moment. Maybe not REAL Bay Area, but Bay Area nonetheless.

That said, clearly there’s a lot potential. Just look at the sweet house next door. Hey, is that pickup lowered?
Thanks Brian for this great find. The only thing that would’ve made this better: “great opportuneity for investers”

Nice quiet street. It has bright and open floor plan with very good potential. Remodeled it & live in or build your dream home. Sellers prefer “AS-IS” sale.

Thanks to burbed reader Madhaus for this find and for this explanation:

[This house] is so awful in the photos that burbed should feature it as another acid trip.  Hideous.  Hard to decide which is the worst photo, the front, the back “lawn” or the prominently featured roll of TP in the bathroom.  The unmade bed is another winner.  Also it’s in Rancho Rinkydinky, not “real” Cupertino.

Hm, personally I don’t think it’s as trippy as the last Acid Cupertino house featured on this site:

Most importantly, the price is lower – so it’s simply not as special.

Is the fall of Cupertino?? Is the rapture at hand? Will I be “left behind”?

Thanks to Burbed reader Laura G for this find.

This, more than any listing as of late proves how amazingly freakin’ special the Bay Area is. You could only be so lucky as to own a home like this.

No kitchen, no bath, part of the structure falling off? Can you say instant equity?
