Thanks to Burbed reader Ken for this find. Here’s what he had to say:

That has to be the most creative gussying up of a 1BR/1BA I’ve seen in quite a while.  And what a bargain at only $850K.

Well Ken, don’t forget that there’s a bedroom in the basement and you get some appliances. WOW!

At the end of the day, the fact that this house has more patios (3) than bedrooms is a clear indicator of the type of potential buyer that will be interested in this house: someone looking for an occasional weekend retreat.

You’re Mr. Executive, living in Atherton during the week. Wow, suddenly it’s Friday, like today – what to do? Shall you go to your condo in SoMA? That seems boring. Ah! Instead, you have a nice mountainy retreat in Los Gatos.

That’s just how rich it is around here! This would make a great second home for anyone, wouldn’t you agree?

Thanks Ken!

This is a very confusing ad. It says it is a 1/1 and describes two bedrooms. It say Los Gatos OR Saratgoa schools. Do you get to choose? Why is the ZIP prestigous? Does the mail come in blinged out trucks?

  2. bob Says:

The other bonus is that this is another one of those houses built on stilts, so when the big one hits, you’ll enjoy a nice ride down the hillside.

  3. sonarrat Says:

The “main bedroom” is bigger than my entire apartment. The basement bedroom probably was built without permits. What a strange little property.. for the executive who prefers to just take Quito Road to his weekend retreat rather than those dangerous mountain roads with their canyon views and natural waterways?

  4. DensityDuck Says:

    sonarrat: exactly.

Probably the idea here is that this is the “weekend house” for a forty- or fifty-something childless couple (either the kids moved out or they never had them.) They spend the week at a condo in the town center of wherever they work, and they spend Friday evening through Monday morning up at the hill house.

  5. madhaus Says:

Or this is the only house for a childless couple who have had it with city noise and want to pretend they own an estate in the woods. Because at $850,000, that’s what a house in Santa Clara would run them.

But that just adds to the charm! If it happened, you could just re-label it as a “charming mobile home”. Or maybe “Quaint Carnival Ride in Prestigious Monte Sereno”.

And besides, housing doubles every 10 years according to RealEstater. So if you snag it now, it will be worth a cool $1.7 million in 2018!

And think of all the prestige you will feel being in the 95030 zipcode! Just not sure how you will entertain guests…..

  7. sonarrat Says:

    Sold 11/29/2005: $720,000

Buyer got an ARM but did put 20% down.

  8. argblaster Says:

A 1-bedroom — yeah the schools are really important in setting the value of this “estate”

  9. rick Says:

Why an executive need 3 patios?

If he wants to entertain guesses then where the hell are the restrooms? Portables?

  10. Knicksfan Says:

One patio per class of employee.

    C-level like him

    VPs

    Others

  11. anon Says:

lol, this house is pretty exclusive; knicksfan, why would the owner have anyone besides board level people over at his house in the first place?

Just walked by http://www.trulia.com/property/1050048692-1206-Main-St-Santa-Clara-CA-95050 while returning from the Santa Clara fair. Seriously, who buys that?! $2M+ to live across small, badly maintained 2/1 and 3/1 ranchers.

    They would? They would too?

EXECUTIVE Unabomber shack: Like so much Bay Area real estate it is easily worth half what is being asked.

  16. rick Says:

I used to work up in the Pennisula and still don’t understand what’s the big fuss about PA, other than RE lives there. Yes certain areas of PA are executive class, and even some of them are truly McMansions. But if you check out Hillsborough and all the McMansions up north in the hills, you know the world is much bigger than PA. Who really lives in PA? Steve Jobs? Larry lives in up Pennisula.

And comparing to the nice white collar towns, what does Maintain View have really? Or Sunnyvale? Is there anything like San Carlos downtown? Or Burlingame’s broadway? Heck none of them can even beat Foster City. I used to think Mountain View and Sunnyvale are lower middle class people (and they largely were), now they can look down on lower middle class people. This bubble has proven one thing: even pigs go to heaven when you blow hard enough.

  17. rick Says:

I know that a lot of people will dispute what I say because they live near PA. But in up Pennisula that was pretty much the view.

  18. madhaus Says:

rick, I recently was in downtown San Carlos, there was a bunch of construction which made it very difficult to walk around. I think this was on Laurel, so I don’t know if this is “core downtown.” Walked a couple of blocks to an old-fashioned grill/diner type place and got some very indifferent service.

  19. cardinal2007 Says:

I have actually noticed a lot more construction in downtown PA recently, it doesn’t help that the Walgreens was burned down by some crazy person from EPA, poor Walgreens. But there have been a few changes from when I first came by in 2004. Some of the persian rug stores are gone, there were too many back then. There is new construction, and now there is a new frozen yogurt trend that has hit it and downtown MV as well, I’m not a fan.

Now what need to become a good downtown is downtown RWC, it is too dead at times, maybe a good mix of overpriced condos, and overpriced apartments will help it out. Belmont’s downtown is a joke, and seriously Foster City doesn’t have one, just like Fremont, I can’t find one in either, if you know where they are please point them out. I might consider moving to Fremont if it had one.

  20. nomadic Says:

DreamT, following the link you put in post #13, it ultimately lead me to the realtor’s brochure:
    http://www.repsweb.com/vrtour/mbm/0308/1206main/links/flyer.pdf

Odd, because it says the house has four bedrooms, 3400 sf and is listed for $1.75M. Really odd, because Trulia says it last sold 6/07 for $2.1M (and 1/06 for $2.0M; Redfin also shows it’s still assessed for only $326k too).

  21. DreamT Says:

nomadic – the actual brochure we picked up from the front yard looks exactly the same as that pdf, but with more details. It states six bedrooms, plus additional home office, plus library/study, plus bonus recreational room. It looks to me like the pdf online is a previous version of the final brochure. Also what I have claims 4100sqf and 10179sqf.
Still would like to know what’s in the mind of the ’06, ’07 and future buyer. If they meant to live in it, they must quickly have found out that it’s not a such a “quiet and tranquil” setting.
