Thanks to Burbed reader Jeff for this find. Wow! $1027 per square foot? If this doesn’t put San Mateo back in the running for Real Bay Area, I don’t know what does! This is freakin’ awesome!

And… apparently it’s a great candidate for a tear down!

The yellow-ish sky does concern me a little bit. And what’s up with that strange window in the back? What the heck is going on in this photo?

Well, it doesn’t matter – it’s in the heart of HAYWARD PARK. Sure you’ve never heard of it, I’ve never heard of it, but it’s in all caps so it must be important.

Woo the good times are coming back!

Yeah, the yellow sky is definitely a trip. I think this photo was taken from the Mars lander, if you ask me.

  2. Herve Says:

    Reduced to $649K.

$983 per sq ft only now. San Mateo, you’re out.

  3. sv_newbie Says:

Wow.. just think of all the money you will save in utilities with this small house! With gas prices on rise, it’ll be smart move for any family.
And, of course it’s good for environment.

Last purchased 5/07 for $696k. Ouch. It doesn’t appear to be a short sale but PropertyShark doesn’t say what the loan amount was.

I thought it is vanilla sky where fantasy of RBA housing market starts.

Hayward Park may be the most incomprehensible high-priced neighborhood, next to Noe Valley in SF. What do people see in it? There are a lot of cute victorians, but there are cute victorians in Chicago too and nobody ever paid $1000 a square foot for them.

  7. DreamT Says:

you know you’re RBA if you paid a premium for sqf. just for the priviledge to tear down the house

  8. Joe Says:

I wouldn’t buy this place if it was 1/3 of the current asking price.

  9. UnrealAlex Says:

That is seriously CUTE. I’d buy it in a heartbeat, if they moved the decimal point over. If I had credit.

Let’s see. There aren’t many new homes around there, so for the sake of argument I’ll compare it to Foster City. They have approved plans for a 2500 sf house. Lot is 6000 sf. So <a href=”http://www.movoto.com/real-estate/homes-for-sale/CA/Foster-City/15-Montego-Ln-100_80914655.htm”this is pretty close. Can you build that new house for less than $350,000?

  11. sonarrat Says:

Weird. It displayed correctly in the preview..

    15 Montego Ln, Foster City

I’ve heard $300/sqft for construction in the peninsula, that would mean $850,000 for construction of a 2500sqft house, not counting demolition costs. I can understand the lot size versus the house size issue.

This house as it is is right up against the alley, and has a large front yard due to that. It is a strange setup, the garage is at the end of a long driveway, but not attached to the house, it seems like a bit of a waste, but I haven’t seen it so I don’t know for certain.

I always thought the name was cute (presumably because of proximity to the San Mateo-Hayward bridge). I think they should market themselves as “Hayward Park: Gateway to Hayward” … That’d get the $/square ft right back over $1k for sure!

  14. R Says:

You can now find a decent contractor for a lot less than $300/sq ft. Don’t know the average but I know it’s less than that.

    That’s right!

This is called adding value, right Real Estater?

  16. anon Says:

oh wow – that gravatar is classic. I can’t believe I found that.

  17. nomadic Says:

    what is it?

  18. AmusedLurker Says:

I’m sure the question was asked in jest but…Hayward Park was named after the guy who used to own that section of what became San Mateo – Alvinza Hayward who was known as California’s first millionaire. After he died in 1904 his huge mansion was turned into the Peninsula Hotel which burned to the ground in 1920 – the rest of the estate was subdivided. At that time (1905) rather than building the homes prior to sale, the realtors sold the bare lots after the streets were laid out – this explains the many different styles of homes in the neighborhood. Personally I like the older homes but they are definitely asking WAY too much for this one!

I vote #18 the post of the week. Thanks, AL.

Yellow sky? Not Vanilla Sky. Not Mars Lander. It’s Travis McGee! And it’s another mystery why anyone would pay almost a thou a foot for a “bungalow/cottage” that looks like a blue Monopoly house.

I can’t tell what the gravatar in #15 and #16 is either. Is it someone from Star Trek:TNG? I really haven’t a clue, but I couldn’t recognize Pralay’s polar bear or Aaron’s Bay Area map, either.
