It's a business transaction. Nothing less, nothing more. The borrower walking away from the mortgage is a business risk the lender assumes when they make the loan, a risk they are being compensated for and presumably have expertise in assessing prior to underwriting the loan. No reason to feel sorry for lenders that made asinine decisions during the bubble years. How is it immoral to walk away from a mortgage? It’s a business transaction. Nothing less, nothing more. That a lawyer would offer "morally wrong" advice that is still legal? LOL. Their job is to keep people on the "right" side of the law only. To me there are only shades of difference between that and any other "socially responsible" activity. For example, driving a gas-guzzler when you don't need it for carpools or transporting stuff. Or my annoying neighbors who dump so much water on their lawn every summer, there is a creek continually running down my gutter. It's wet constantly and grows furry, slippery algae.
