I love this house. I saw it when it first went on the market. The location is GREAT. It is right across from the SC library, a few blocks from laurel and offers a great city location. Now the down side, the big backyard is completely over shadowed by large apartments. There is no privacy anywhere. All the windows on the sides look into peoples apartments. very cozy! This building was built in the 1920s and is almost all original. You needed deep pockets for this project!

To be fair, I would have taken a LOOOONG hard look at this place if it had been on the market when we were shopping. Ugly houses are usually a lot cheaper! But I likely would not have been okay with the apartments right next door.

No.

If you put aside the location fails (which are bad) the house itself is semi-awesome. It’s dated and has some annoying flaws (Tandem garage? RLY?) but it’s as big as a McMansion when it comes to square feet and *unlike* a McMansion it has character. Granted it’s a *weird* character, but properly decorated it could make for a pretty funky pad.
(That proviso about “if it doesn’t look like the perfect place for a vintage Playboy photoshoot you’ve failed” probably applies, and the problem right now is that between the bathroom and the shuffleboard floor the interior looks more like an assisted living facility. “No grandma, we’re not shooting the centerfold here. Please, stop, put that back on… AAAAAAAGH!”)

Ugly houses with good bones are the best buys you can find. Unless they have serious location fails, like this one does. But it has some offsetting location wins. I like houses that don’t have perigraniteel smeared all over them like zit cream on a chocolate lovin’ teen.

With that zoning and location this is a scraper fated to become multifamily housing of one sort or another, probably a rental complex given the current state of the market.
