If you’re in the Bay Area, the answer is clearly: “Makes it more special.”

Everything in the Bay Area only serves to make housing more expensive. Let’s take a look at a map and see how the components of this particular property make it a must buy:

First, this house is situated right near the International terminal of SFO. This means that rich moguls from Moscow and Shanghai and Mumbai will easily be able to visit their investment properties in your neighborhood. Haven’t you heard? With the dollar so cheap, these people are snapping up real estate all over - they’ll probably see your house as they taxi to the gate and say “I vant that house! Here are my rubles!”

Next, there’s tranquil 101. Everyone wants easy access to freeways - boom, a major commute saver.

Power lines! Everyone knows that California’s energy grid is in shambles, and that it is 1 step up from Iraq’s. Fortunately, by having these power lines near you, you will likely have first dibs to energy if they should fall down. It’s called thinking ahead.

Not shown, this house is also located near Bart and Caltrain - again, more great commute options.

Frankly, I don’t see how you lose - especially with this bargain basement price of just $735,000 for a 3/1!

Nice quiet street. It has bright and open floor plan with very good potential. Remodeled it & live in or build your dream home. Sellers prefer “AS-IS” sale.

Thanks to burbed reader Madhaus for this find and for this explanation:

[This house] is so awful in the photos that burbed should feature it as another acid trip.  Hideous.  Hard to decide which is the worst photo, the front, the back “lawn” or the prominently featured roll of TP in the bathroom.  The unmade bed is another winner.  Also it’s in Rancho Rinkydinky, not “real” Cupertino.

Hm, personally I don’t think it’s as trippy as the last Acid Cupertino house featured on this site:

Most importantly, the price is lower - so it’s simply not as special.

Is the fall of Cupertino?? Is the rapture at hand? Will I be “left behind”?

Yet another pink house in San Mateo: San Carlos

1332 Rosewood Ave, San Carlos 94070
$739,000

* Status: Active
* Bedroom: 2
* Bathroom: 1
* Year Built: 1948
* Lot Size: 4920
* Square Footage: 1040
* List Date: 5/23/2008
* Garage Spaces: 1
* MLS#: 810615

Not on the market for over 50 years! Hardwood floors throughout most of the home. Eat in kitchen and dining room. Master bedroom has an additional extra large closet. Nice sized yard with pool with solar heating. No showing until 5/27/08. Great street.

Thanks to an anonymous Burbed reader for this find. Frankly, I’m not sure why there are so many pink houses in San Mateo County. There seems to be a bunch in Redwood City and San Carlos.

Nonetheless, my favorite part of this house is that it hasn’t been on the market for 50 years. Yep, that means the current owner is paying $510 a year in property tax. You? You’ll be paying ~$7390 - about 1300% more. But that’s fair because you’ll be consuming more services than the current owner.

Another aspect is that this house hasn’t been on the market for 50 years. Like a fine wine, this house has clearly gotten more graceful and fine with age. Personally I would buy this house, seal it for another 50 years, and then have a smashing uncorking party. By then, this house will be amazing. In fact, by then, all the items you see in the house will be historic - more instant equity. Just think, you could even charge admission for touring the house!

So be like the Smithsonian and buy this classic house before it’s too late!

When people ask me “Burbed, I love families. Can you tell me where I can find the most family friendly city in America?” I tell them: Silicon Valley.

As we all know, things like rampant age discrimination, 14 hour work days, and 2 hour commutes are things instituted by our employers to ensure that at some point, we want to give up working and spend more time with our families. Otherwise, our Type A personalities would just want to work forever. And, since everyone is getting rich with stock options (VMWare!), people can afford to stop working. Think of it as tough love.

So just imagine, you finally give up because of the rampant age discrimination, the 14 hour work days, and the 2 hour commutes - you come home to this house. Actually, it’s not a house - but rather two houses because you spent your option money building 2 houses on this lot so that you can 10 feet away from in-laws. You can constantly see them, they can constantly see you. You can take care of them, they can take care of you.

Family. That’s what this is all about. I’m welling up in tears just thinking about this.

Before you plunk down your cash on this house which is going to be steps away from Santana Row 2.0, let’s take a look at some more photos:

You know what’s going to make this house look even better? Aside from building 2 houses? It’s the fact that soon you’ll be walking distance from the Sunnyvale branch of LV, Gucci, Emporio Armani, Blowfish Sushi, and the other fine establishments that Santana Row 2.0 is going to bring.

That’s instant equity my friends - instant equity you can share with your in-laws living 10 feet away. Your family.

$3000 a month in rent for a 2/1 house in Mountain View?

* Lot Size: 3049

700+sf in finished basement, not included in living sf.(Plumbed for 2nd BATH). Finished 1 Car Garage. Add Baseboard heating and use as office. GREAT HOME, LOCATION, and PROPERTY FOR RENT OR LIVING!

Look familiar?

It should! It’s the house that was featured in the last post on Burbed in 2007.

Apparently, it’s still ready for move in! Except now you can also rent it. Unfortunately, the rental cost isn’t posted, but assuming a 90% LTV ARM, that would be $3000 for the mortgage payments alone! But isn’t the going rental cost of a SFH in Mountain View about $2500 a month?

So… would you rent this for $2500? Maybe. After all, it is Mountain View - free wifi and all. But wouldn’t you feel better about owning it and paying $3000 + property tax and more? Don’t forget about the income tax break you would get from paying that mortgage.

I don’t know what’s wrong with kids these days. Why won’t they man up and just buy this house already?

Idyllic country setting nestled quietly between million dollar homes in sought after San Carlos Hills. Magnificent views; 7,000 sq ft lot w/ endless development potential. Country Style living, conveniently located to downtown San Carlos. Open House this Sunday 05/04 1:30-4:30

Wow… it looks like Hurley, Ben, and John could’ve simply come to San Carlos to find Jacob’s Cabin. Heh.

But seriously, I’ve always wondered about San Carlos. It’s tiny, there’s not much to be known about this city, so I’ve always had reservations about whether San Carlos, The City of Good Living, is Real Bay Area or not.

Well, this house simply seals the deal. $1073 a square foot? Wowzers. This is Palo Alto territory. And look at the giant plot of land you’re getting - nearly 7000 sqft.

Congratulations San Carlos. Welcome to the club.

BTW, to the next owner: might I suggest building a zip line? That’d be kind of neat!

West-Side locale-close prox.to downtown,shops,parks,restaurants,EZ to freeways,transportation,airports.Established neighborhood of higher priced homes.There’s a bonus den,all appliances included,attached garage,spacious yd/patio area with mature fruit trees & roses.Electrical was updated.Air conditioning & central heat. Sold as-is to settle estate.Not a short sale,bank repo.,or court confirmation.

This was sent in by a Burbed reader who declined to be named. It looked to him that this house was going to topple over, and perhaps that’s why it’s a mere $700k.

I disagree.

I think that this is actually an artistic technique that the Realtor chose. By using an angle, the viewer is drawn in - his attention grabbed and stolen as he tries to figure out WTF is wrong with the photo. And by doing so, he has captured precious mindshare.

Further adding to the mystique of this abode is this photo:

639206525_12005howard.jpg

The depth of this photo is amazing. The contrast of the fence outdoors and the lit woodpanels indoor seems to indicate that no matter where you go, you are stuck in this house. The green carpet means that whether you’re inside or outside, you’re there. The meaning is so deep my mind spins. I hear copious LSD will really help you appreciate this house.

Well, better buy it soon before this estate gets settled. Whatever that means!
