imageA few years ago, I met some neighbor parents when one of my kids befriended their kids, and we got to talking about real estate.  The dad was going on and on about how ridiculous it was that all he could afford was a dinky little tract house.  “I am a Vice President!  I should be living in an Executive Home!  Not here!”

Now I never asked him what he meant by “Executive Home.”  He probably meant a big, new house, on a big lot close to a golf course.  He sure didn’t mean his late-50s rancher with second story addition, on a lot closer to a fifth than a quarter acre.

imageI wonder if today’s house would have been acceptable to him, or if it’s still too close to the (gasp) worker bees.  Anyway, the guy and his family soon moved back to San Diego (where he could buy himself an Executive Home on a golf course, but then again, by 2003 so could almost anyone else).  I wonder what he thinks of Occupy San Diego?

Weren’t executives, at least back in the good old days, famous for having three-martini lunches?  Well, the bar’s all ready in this house!  Now, which is worse, the carpet or the wallpaper?

Hey, the house that caused a 210 post-war… is BACK ON THE MARKET!

Surprisingly, it never sold at 1.05 million. Shocking, I know. Zillow lets us know they stared out at 1.14 million. After 3 years of watching housing tank they think that their precious house suffered a terrible loss of almost 17% and they’re now offering it for $949k. How generous of them! While other markets suffered 30-60% losses, Belmont is so special that 17% is a gift to the buyer!

It’ll be interesting to see if they manage to move the house this time. If the bought it for 750 and truly ripped it down to the studs, they’re probably selling it at ‘cost’ now. 200k for redoing everything in a house plus the outside seems about right. Unless you live somewhere non-special, where 200k would buy you a 3,000 sq foot new build.

I don’t think you understand this Spring Bounce idea, sfbb,  You see, prices in the RBA always go up.  Guaranteed.  That’s why this house is shaped the way it is:

Check out that new siding!  Dayumn!  That’s not a contractor’s special- that is modern art!  It’s a statement about the cost of conformity!  Why, oh why would the bank want to get rid of this post-post modernist masterpiece?  This is installation art taken to its next level!  I mean, hell, if a shark in formaldehdye can sell for $12M  (http://www.stuckism.com/Shark.html) this place ought to be worth at least $6M.  If this place came with some shark’s teeth, it might be worth $12M too.  Shark’s teeth are frickin cool!

To the realtor’s credit, the disclosures are made openly- “HOME NEEDS FINISHING TOUCHES”.  This kind of statement speaks volumes about perspective.  When I think about finishing touches, I think about adding outlet colors, picking color schemes, hanging drapes, etc.  These guys think about $100K remodeling jobs.
But the realtor really nails it with his/her description- “THIS PROPERTY HAS A LOT OF POTENTIAL!!”  Like potential energy.  Like potential to be blown over in the next storm.

Woot-woooooooot!

Uh, Sam… they’re practically giving this house away. All you need to do is add a little elbow grease… and some walls… and… uh… some innovation.

Personally, I think this house enables you to express your freedom. Therefore, if you hate this house, you hate Freedom. Why do you hate freedom this close to July 4th? Are you a terrorist?

Indeed! This can be the showpiece of your 1977 house collection. There are many house collectors in the Bay Area as you can make a solid income giving tours of 1970′s houses. Sure you might first need to add a deck so that your patrons don’t fall to their death, but hey that’s a small investment towards improving this show piece.

I wonder if you could get this designated as a POI on a TomTom or Garmin! That’d be pretty neat. Coyote Point, Pez Museum, Hiller Aviation Museum, and “The 1977 House EXPERIENCE at 1822 Bayview Ave”. Wow… pretty soon San Mateo county will be its own cultural hotbed. That’d be pretty awesome!

And it starts with this amazingly cheap house. Go for it. Or have your trust acquire it so that we can all enjoy this 1977 house.

Two words: Natural Selection

Let’s face it, the Bay Area continually needs to stay sharp and smart in order to remain competitive. So… sometimes we need to get rid of the less desirable people.
